What’s that in your Pocket?

The activity that follows is one that focuses on reading and writing/observing.  Even at the young age of eight years, students can start to experience the world of observation in writing.  And the purpose of the following activity is to help heighten students’ sensory awareness, which is an important goal whether or not it is linked to writing.

First, select a book for the class to read as a group.  For example, The Kid Who Ran for President, by Dan Gutman.  Before reading the selection, bring to class a series of objects that one might find in the pockets of the main character.  I might bring to class the following objects that would give students a clue into Judson Moon’s personality: a packet of lemonade, a copy of the Constitution, pictures of news reporters, pictures of United States Presidents, a listing of facts about the White House, pictures of First Ladies, a middle school class schedule, and a voting card.

Once these objects are laid out before the class with a cloth covering them, students will have one minute to study the materials closely, replace the cloth, and return to their desks to write a list of what they saw.

Next, after their lists have been created, students will have the opportunity to compare lists with other students and discuss what the main character may be like. What are clues into his or her personality? What might be significant clues about his life?

The most important part of this lesson is that students draw inferences from the details they have observed.

Now, students are encouraged to select a favorite book from home; one that is favored because of a particular character in it, and bring with them to class their own set of fictitious materials that might be found in that character’s pocket.  Students should also bring to class a paragraph about that character’s personality.  In groups or pairs, students may play the same game using the materials brought from home for each of their selected characters.
