What do baby elephants and high frequency words have in common?
Posted on October 3, 2012 by Melissa Edwards in Literacy, Personal Experiences.
I am having some interesting experiences being both an educator and a mother (my daughter is in first grade now).
Since I taught upper elementary grades, figuring out ways to try to help in first grade can be quite puzzling for me … I don’t want to push too hard but I want to push enough …
One of the areas my daughter and I need to continue to work on is her recognition of sight words …
I am glad to have MaryRuth Books titles available on Big Universe to help with high frequency words!
At times I will start off reading and then stop for my daughter to read the words she knows. Every now and then, my daughter will ask me to read one sentence and let her read the next sentence. We can also use these books to do our own version of choral reading.
As my daughter begins to recognize more and more words in the stories, she wants to exercise her independence and read on her own. Right now, she focuses a great deal on the beginning sounds …
Several of the high frequency words we have been practicing recently can be found in Baby Elephant’s Trunk, so that is her favorite right now!
I can’t wait to look and see which MaryRuth Books will go with the words we practice next week, but it always good to know we can come back and review these words reading books rather than just calling individual words from flash cards.
My daughter was also telling me the difference in fiction and non-fiction books earlier this week, so perhaps we will have a Big Universe scavenger hunt to see what books we can find for each of those categories.

Good morning,
My name is Abby Herbert and I help to run a website offering hundreds of free foundation stage and key stage 1 teaching resources called Early Learning HQ (www.earlylearninghq.org.uk).
I can see that you have been discussing high frequency words and I thought I would just take a moment to draw your attention to the literacy section of our site, where you will find numerous resources relating to this topic: http://www.earlylearninghq. org.uk/ literacy /high-frequency-words/ . If you find the useful then would you consider linking to our page so other parents and teachers can use them as well. If you have any improvements that can be made then please get in touch!
Thank you,
Abby
