Posted by Big Universe on Dec 8, 2016 5:01:56 PM

Daphne, AL - Library Media Specialist Sandi Peak knows that middle schoolers can be difficult to impress — especially when it comes to reading. She also knows that reading isn’t at the top of the to-do list for the 625 7-8 grade students enrolled at Daphne Middle School in the Baldwin County School District. “Middle school is different than any other group,” Ms. Peak says. “We’ve found it to be a struggle to motivate them to read.”

Columbia, SC - During the 2015-16 school year Shannon Ryan, Library Media Specialist at Lake Carolina Elementary Upper Campus (LCEU) and Elementary District Representative for the Richland School District Two in Columbia, SC, set the goal to get more students reading nonfiction. In recent years, new standards have placed more emphasis on reading nonfiction and developing students’ research skills across content areas. With this goal in mind, Ms. Ryan decided to start a weekly trivia contest for students that would require them to read a nonfiction book in order to find the answer to the trivia question.

Success Story: Reading Flourishes in a Digital Learning Environment

Bluffton, SC - The library at Red Cedar Elementary School is a hive of activity. But you won’t find a librarian or teacher shushing students as they excitedly share ideas with each other. Red Cedar is participating in a Beaufort County School District program called Media Center 2.0 that has transformed the library into a high tech makerspace. “Three years ago we moved all of the physical books out of the library to other areas around the school,” shares Instructional Coach Cynthia Laizer.“We were left with a big empty space that we filled with Promethean tables, electronic whiteboards, and other tools students can use to explore and create. The library is always full of students and energy.” Even though there are no longer bookshelves in the library, students and teachers still have plenty of access to books thanks to the Big Universe eBook library.

Greenwich, CT - There were fewer pencils, paper and textbooks being used during the 2015-16 school year at Greenwich Public Schools’ North Street Elementary School. That’s because every teacher and student received an iPad Air as part of the district’s Digital Learning Initiative. “All of the iPads came loaded with apps the district curriculum coordinator selected,” says Jill Flood, the principal at North Street. “It didn’t take our teachers long to discover Big Universe and what an incredible resource it is for every subject in the curriculum.”

Kendallville, IN - When Lance Yoder considered becoming the District Technology Peer Coach for Indiana's East Noble School Corporation, he knew he could make a difference. Yoder's fourth-grade students already used technology every day. So, he felt he would be able to help other teachers integrate technology in their classrooms as East Noble rolled out its ambitious district-wide 1-to-1 implementation. Fast-forward, now in their second year using three different devices (depending upon grade level), East Noble's 1-to-1 program is a success. One key to their success is Big Universe. Students and teachers are able to utilize Big Universe's vast array of digital fiction and non-fiction content on all three devices. The combination of access to technology and content enables students to learn in an interactive and engaging way. Teachers are able to monitor, track and individualize the learning. Put all that together and you start thinking it's not just a story to remember, it's one for the books.
