Big Universe had the chance to sit down with Linda De Carvalho, Marketing Brand Manager from Teacher Created Materials as a part of our Publisher Spotlight campaign:
Big Universe: What are the age ranges/levels that you publish for?
Teacher Created Materials: We like to think that our books are a joy for anyone who picks one up but they are specifically written and intended for interest age levels 3 to 18 and reading level ranges from below level through reading level 6.
Big Universe: What are some of the most popular items that you've published in the last three years?
Teacher Created Materials: Our second edition TIME FOR KIDS® Readers are a great addition to our nonfiction line. These books capture the interest of readers and provide the quality informational text that is so important to Common Core.
Big Universe: In looking at the current front list and the upcoming season, are there any specific themes that you've focused on in the catalog?
Teacher Created Materials: As always, our focus is on publishing books that will motivate young readers to want to read and enjoy learning at the same time in order to fulfill our company’s vision “to create a world in which children love to learn.” In addition, we emphasis our books’ quality content and alignment to the Common Core and other state standards.
Big Universe: Do you have a personal favorite from the current catalog that isn't getting lots of 'buzz'? What is it about that book that sets it apart for you?
Teacher Created Materials: It’s very difficult for me to single out just one book but my favorite series of books comes from our Mathematics Readers line. These are great books to introduce and reinforce important math concepts while flipping through pages of amazing content designed to keep readers interested.
Big Universe: What is the book that has been the biggest surprise to you (can be a sleeper, new series that has gone like wildfire, a book that was the cover but not as popular as others, etc.)?
Teacher Created Materials: We really haven’t seen any sleepers but instead a very steady and consistent increase in the demand for our TIME FOR KIDS® Nonfiction Readers. The second edition gave this already popular series an amazing boost.
Big Universe: What's next for your company? Are there changes coming in the following year? Do you have any new series or product lines that you’d like to share with us?
Teacher Created Materials: We recently released our new Fiction Readers and have additional levels to release later in the year! These are engaging books filled with great stories that feature themes that align with our TIME FOR KIDS® Nonfiction Readers. This pairing of fiction and informational text helps to introduce readers to multiple text types as called for in the Common Core State Standards.
