Answers To Common Questions About At Home Tutoring

Where should a tutoring program start?

Parents, friends, siblings and paid tutors can use a pre-assessment to determine the student's current academic level. If that seems to complicated, tutors can ask the child's school teacher to recommend academic areas for tutoring. If all else fails, tutors can refer to the student's textbook and teach lessons that correspond to what they are learning in school. Preteaching also increase academic achievement. Preteaching is teaching the content material to the student prior to the whole class lesson in the classroom.

Where should tutoring take place?

It is best for the lessons to take place in a quiet environment. Tutoring can take place in the student's home, at the library, or in a coffee shop. Sometimes schools have tutoring after school on campus.

What materials should be used?

A multitude of materials can be used. Students and teachers can use:

  • Textbooks
  • Online books
  • reading books
  • tablets
  • computers
  • flashcards
  • U-tube
  • Big Universe Learning www.biguniverse.com (online books, teacher's guides, and an online writing program)
  • art supplies
  • a dictionary
  • a thesaurus

How can we make tutoring successful?

Student engagement is the key to learning. Learning can and should be fun! Integrating art and/or music into academic lesson can spark a child's interest. In addition, humor is a powerful tool in learning. People love laughing!
