Making your classroom great builds on an established set of rules in place. Classroom management deals with more than just bad behaviors, it deals with all aspects of the classroom and school environment. This blog post will focus on things that will make your classroom management system even better.
Be positive– By remaining positive, you can turn a bad day into a great day! Most students love compliments. Say something positive to every child. This is especially important when we have meetings with parents. By listing their strengths you are being positive. There is at least one thing each child does GREAT! (Note: It doesn’t have to be an academic strength.)
Be realistic with expectations– Using posters and discipline referral forms, helps you establish guidelines. However, what are your expectations? If your students are constantly unprepared, focus on one expectation at a time: coming to class prepared. Then move on to other areas of concern. This allows you, as the teacher to establish clear expectations. I have included a funny poem that illustrates how we say things to students that don’t really make sense.
Laugh with your students– Humor always seems to lighten the mood of any classroom. When you laugh together, you are creating a positive learning environment. Jokes and riddles are actually higher level thinking skills.
Prior skills needed to “get” the joke
- Understanding and mastery of spoken or written language
- Significant background knowledge for the joke
- Hang “funny” posters in your classroom
- Have a riddle or joke of the day
- Allow students to bring in their own jokes or riddles
- Allow students to create their own jokes and riddles and share them
- Read the comics section of the paper
- Find age appropriate resources
Listen– Get to know your students. If there is mutual respect, your students will be less likely to behave badly. I had a student that was very difficult to get along with. However, by taking the time to listen I was able to actually help this student. I found out that his home life wasn’t a stellar situation. It doesn’t excuse the bad behavior, but it gave me some understanding and in turn patience toward this student. Teaching active listening to your students will help them learn the difference between listening and hearing.
Collaborate with other teachers- Work with other teachers in your hall or grade level. You can brainstorm ideas that work for both of you.
