Michael,
Fortunately, my daughter was not bitten. The snake was stretched out in the grass in our yard. My daughter was playing and stepped on it while running by. She was in her bare feet and knew that something didn't feel/seem right, so she ran in the house and said, "I stepped on a weird hose or something...or maybe even a snake." That's when we went out to investigate. (Our dog had been bitten the previous week, but the vet said at that time of year the venom was not as potent -- as say in the spring. So, the dog rallied quickly.) Snakes and wild things are just part of living in a rural setting!

OHHHHHHHHHHHHH, This is so exciting. What would it cost for my grandson to use this site for homeschooling next year for KD? As MamaPat and retired reading teacher & writing coach, it's my job to scout out things for his daddy to use for homeschooling. Any suggestions? MamaPat

What happened to your daughter after stepping on a copperhead snake? Well, these snakes are reportedly "not aggressive" and they only attack "wildly" if disturbed during mating season. So we should all be careful. Source: copperheadsnake.net

What an interesting concept: their ideas literally DROVE the follow up conversation. What an energetic way to motivate them to motivate themselves. Good teaching produces good learning and those never die.

Well it would be much better that you could read faster and still understand it right? To be able to speed read while still getting the meaning, I think speed reading programs and courses would be a great idea. These kind of programs actually help you to improve your speed when reading by teaching you techniques and strategies on how to read fast.

You have a great point here. Questions are important - questions that students create. This reminds me of a strategy that I used before (and should definitely bring back): After the pre-reading of a book have the students brainstorm questions about the book (as well as predictions) and write them down. Throughout the reading of the book, revisit the questions and see what gets answered and write down new questions.

As for your other questions - yes, yes, yes... if the students create their own questions and bring to light the questions they are naturally having in their head, then their comprehension must get better. We should encourage them to stop and write them down while their reading or maybe when the reflect on their reading.

Thanks for the great post!
